"Beauty has many different meanings. Beauty is finding the best qualities in someone or something." - Jess
When you look at Jess's photo you can clearly see she is a gorgeous woman, who cares deeply about staying active and fit, with such an infectious smile you can't help but smile along with her. It might not be obvious at first glance that this woman has been through hell and back - and her best girl Biggie was with her through it all.
"In early 2014, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 27. I went through chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. My dog, Biggie, was with me every step of the way! On good days, I'd take her on runs with me or sit outside and enjoy the sunshine together. On bad days she'd cuddle up with me in bed and help me feel better. Later that same year, Biggie was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor and had surgery to remove it, so I returned the favor and comforted her in her recovery. Biggie has been with me through thick and thin!"
Our session took place a few short weeks after Jess' five year anniversary of being cancer free. For those of you whose lives have been touched by cancer, you will know that five years is the big one. It's a milestone of utmost importance because upon reaching that mark, the chance of cancer recurrence significantly decreases.
My experience with Jess during her session was that she was an extremely sweet, patient, and upbeat woman, and the love shared with Biggie was on full display. I can't even imagine what she has gone through, but she has come out of the fire with such strength and grace - she is absolutely an inspiration! Through her experience with massage therapy after her breast cancer surgery, she was inspired to become a Licensed Massage Therapist, and now helps people in her community through her practice, Mobility Massage, located in Westlake, Ohio. She is passionate, and she is making a difference in the world.
"Quirky, lovable and energetic. Biggie has so much personality!"
Biggie absolutely lived up to her mom's description of her, and her personality is gregarious and carefree. Being that their session was held in late fall, we were lucky enough to find the most beautiful backdrops, painted golden yellow and orange from the sun spilling onto the changing leaves.
Between galloping across the park and jumping for joy, and I am sure wondering why she was on top of a picnic table with a camera in her face - Biggie tackled every location with an enthusiasm that was as endearing as it was contagious.
One thing I can say for sure, is that these two are meant to be in each other's lives. Jess, thank you so much for braving the chilly fall weather with me (and sacrificing a shirt to Biggie's teeth 🤣) and sharing your story with the world! I am so, so glad you were a part of Barking Beautiful! ♥
